ingenico-wired-pinpad-smalLike most business owners today, you are probably aware of PCI data security standards (PCI DSS) and the importance of complying with them to avoid liability for cardholder data breaches. This issue, we review the ways you can reduce PCI DSS scope, and therefore the time and costs associated with PCI audits.

Protect Stored Data with Tokenization

Tokenization replaces sensitive customer payment information with a non-exploitable representation, or token. One of the most effective methods of minimizing PCI compliance scope, tokenization ensures that your point of sale system never stores unsecured cardholder data.

Tokenization is achieved by using supported EMV hardware like PIN pads, and by using online ordering providers like SpeedDine that do not send sensitive card information to the store, instead sending tokens only.

Protect Data in Transit with Point-to-Point Encryption (E2EE)

While tokenization reduces PCI scope, implementing an EMV and E2EE solution on all stations means your all POS stations can be declared to your Qualified Security Assessor as out of PCI scope, because they are never "aware" of real credit card data. This will further reduce assessment time and cost.

With E2EE, card data is encrypted at an EMV card reader, rendering it unusable until it reaches your payment processor. This protects the information in transit from being intercepted, because even if a hacker is able to get their hands on it, it is useless to them.

E2EE requires that all credit card transactions be processed through an EMV PIN pad, and that remote ordering sources like websites send tokenized card data or transaction details only.

Other EMV Benefits

While EMV hardware plays a major role in reducing PCI scope, EMV PIN pads have additional benefits:

  • Accepting EMV payments at the door with a mobile EMV device eliminates the need for your customers to give credit card numbers over the phone or online, and allows delivery credit card transactions to be processed at lower card-present rates. Get more information about SpeedLine Pay@ the Door.
  • Accepting chip cards by dipping or tapping at the EMV PIN pad eliminates counterfeit credit card fraud in-store, and associated chargebacks.
  • Some payment brands have introduced programs that waive the merchant's annual PCI-DSS audit if 75% of transactions are processed through an EMV certified device.

Owners know that locking up their store and using a security system to protect their physical assets is a good cost/benefit proposition. The cost of a reduced scope card processing solution is much the same.
