In the wake of Harvey, and with Hurricane Irma bearing down on the Caribbean and Florida, we are thinking of our customers who may be in the path. If you are making preparations for the storm, here are some important tips. For the rest of us—a reminder to review our disaster preparedness plans.

Remove your computersIf you only have time or space to take one, take the primary server (usually Station1).

  1. Exit Terminal.
  2. Shut down the computer.
  3. Take the computer with you as you evacuate to a secure location. If possible, take all your computers with you.

Back up your data

  1. Copy all files in the C:/SpeedLine folder and any other important files you have saved on the station (for example, the My Documents folder, and any important files or folders on the desktop).
  2. Save the files to a safe location like one of the following:
    • Removable media (for example, a USB flash drive, external hard drive, CD, or DVD), or,
    • Cloud file storage like Google Drive or Dropbox.
  3. Take removable media containing the files, and cloud account login information, with you as you evacuate to a secure location

Protect your computersIf computers are at risk of water damage and cannot be moved, keep them dry:

  1. Once data backups are done, shut down computers and monitors and unplug them.
  2. Shut off battery backup (UPS) units and unplug.
  3. Wrap the computers, monitors, and any other hardware in garbage bags, plastic sheeting, or vinyl tarps.
  4. Raise computers, UPS, and other equipment high off the floor.
